A man lived by a river and he wanted to cross it. So he practiced a siddhi of levitation so that he could walk across the water and it took him 40 years to perfect this siddhi. Finally he could cross the river, and the Buddha was preaching in the neighborhood and the man came to him and he said, “Master, look what I’ve achieved, I can walk on water to cross the river.” and the Buddha said “Yea but the ferry costs a nickel.”
